Digital arrest scams are rising rapidly in India and the Supreme Court recently noted that more than โน3,000 crore has already been lost to them.
Supreme Court directed the authorities to treat it as a national threat, not just a cyber nuisance. Victims now include bankers, retired officers and even members of anti-cybercrime units. The fraudsters often operate from countries such as Myanmar and Thailand and they target vulnerable Senior Citizens.

Digital arrest is when scammers impersonate law enforcement agencies (CBI, Police, Narcotics Bureau, Income Tax) and convince the victim that:
- Their Bank account/ Aadhar is linked to a crime
- There is a โnon-bailable warrantโ against them.
- They may reach out via video calls as wearing fake uniforms of government officials in fake settings of government offices.
- Scammer says the person is โunder surveillanceโ and must not disconnect.
- A fake court order / FIR is flashed on the screen.
- Threat of immediate arrest or asset seizure.
- Instruction to the victims to not contact family or real authorities.
- Victims are pressurised to transfer money as bail amount or verification fee.
- Victim is no more able to connect to cybercriminals after money is transferred.

- Over 85% Indian households are digitally connected, giving scammers access to everyone.
- Deepfake voices and forged digital documents are easy to create.
- AI-powered caller ID spoofing makes the call look like itโs from an official government number.
- Elderly citizens, especially those living alone are the most vulnerable.
- This is cybercrime + psychology + technology working together.

- Remember this rule that no police officer, court or government agency ever asks for money, OTP or bank verification over call.
- If you ever get such a call:
1) Hang up immediately.
2) Call 1930 (National Cyber Fraud Helpline).
3) Report on cybercrime.gov.in.
4) Inform your bank at once to freeze transfer trails.
- Try spreading as much awareness as you can. Even a short message in family WhatsApp groups can save someoneโs life savings.
Digital arrest works because it plays on fear and urgency. Our best defence is awareness, conversation and quick reporting.
If even one person who reads this warns their family, we reduce the power of these scams. Awareness isnโt just information, itโs protection.
