We all know that India-UK Free Trade Agreement has been signed but what does it actually mean for you and me?

An FTA is a deal between two or more countries to lower or eliminate tariffs and duties on goods and services traded between them.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 & 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀

Tariffs will be reduced on wide range of products which includes -

1) Soft drinks, chocolates, biscuits, fish, and beauty products would become more affordable

2) Medical equipment & aerospace parts will see reduced import costs

3) Whisky: Import duty will drop from 150% to 75% and then to 40% over the next 10 years

4) Electric vehicles: Duties will fall sharply from 110% to 10% (within a quota)

5) Luxury UK car brands like Rolls-Royce, JLR and Aston Martin will become cheaper to import

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:

99% of Indian goods sent to the UK will now get zero-duty access, meaning no extra tax or tariffs at the UK border.

This is a huge win for sectors like :

Engineering goods

Chemicals & petrochemicals

Pharmaceuticals

Electronics such as smartphones, cables, and inverters

Jewellery exports are expected to double in 2–3 years

Marine products — Indian seafood can now enter UK duty-free

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 & 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀:

1) The UK has committed to supporting India’s software and IT services, which are expected to grow 15–20% annually.

2) Up to 1,800 Indian chefs, yoga instructors, and musicians will be able to work temporarily in the UK.

And here’s a major relief:

3) 𝗡𝗼 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 — Indian employees on short-term UK visas will only contribute in India for the next three years, saving money and avoiding duplicate payments.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗙𝗧𝗔 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮?

- A major win for India after 3 years of negotiation

- Need to reduce reliance on traditional partners specially after watching USA tariff policy tantrums

- Zero-duty access to 99% of Indian exports to the UK supports Make in India ambitions

The agreement still needs to be ratified by both countries parliaments, a process that may take up to 1 year.

But it’s not just a trade deal, it’s a roadmap to better access, lower costs, and stronger economic ties between India and the UK.
